Villas and Palazzi on Lake Garda


AFFI


Villa Poggi

Villa Poggi in Affi, in the province of Verona, a few kilometres from Lake Garda, is an elegant XVII-XVIII century building, which stands on the slopes of Monte Moscal, and is embellished with a large park rich in statues and fountains. Enlarged by a second building in the XVII Century and by various additions in the following centuries, Villa Poggi at Affi in the province of Verona, a few kilometres from Lake Garda, is a typical example of a villa-company, which at the beginning of 1800, introduce the current production of specialised wines.


House of Girolamo Fracastoro

In actual fact, the House of Girolamo Fracastoro is a true and proper villa, where Girolamo Fracastoro, a doctor and scholar (1478-1553), lived in the XV Century, and where he hosted the illustrious personages of his time.


CAPRINO


Villa Carlotti and Civic Museum

The front part of the prestigious Villa Parlotti in Caprino in the province of Verona, and a few kilometres from Lake Garda, a patrician villa of 1632 and a palazzo since 1682, and now the seat of the Municipality, boasts a splendid garden decorated with statues. There are many rooms inside embellished with frescoes depicting mythological and biblical scenes, as well as scenes from real life and of famous personages. The most famous and characteristic is the Room of Dreams, formerly known as the Grotesque Room, with frescoes on the vault. The ground floor of the villa is occupied by the Civic Museum of Caprino, opened in 1976. It contains fascinating material of the naturalistic, historical and architectural heritage of Monte Baldo in addition to local historical documents and the XV century painting of the mourning of Christ originally stored in the Cemetery Chapel.


Villa Nichesola

An ancient noblemen's villa, known "dei camini", built in the XVI Century. After recent restructuring, it is now the location of the Baldo Community. Villa Nichesola is in contrada Platano, near Caprino in the province of Verona, a few kilometres from Lake Garda. It has a portico with Tuscan columns, with an external stairway at the rear, highly refined doors and windows in stone (with the original gratings on the northern side facing the road), a cornice with saw teeth under the eaves, and a living room on the first floor with a wooden ceiling.


CASTELNUOVO DEL GARDA


Villa D’Emilei Arvedi

Villa D’Emilei Arvedi is situated in the country ward of Cavalcaselle di Castelnuovo del Garda in the province of Verona, a few kilometres from Lake Garda. The Villa was built between the end of the XVII Century and the beginning of the XVIII century. Inside, you will see a large fireplace and exposed beams. The two sides of the villa extend with symmetrical elegance and smoothly unite at the centre in a large staircase, which, with two lateral ramps, rises lightly toward the three entrance arches. The archive of the Emilei contains the documents which testify the rule of the noble family on Cavalcaselle, in the province of Verona. The Emilei produced and sold wine from Lake Garda in the in the ancient tavern of Cavalcaselle many centuries ago. The old tavern was restructured and converted into a hotel. Today the elegant Villa D’Emilei Arvedi is the premises of a wine store.


CAVAION VERONESE


Villa Cordevigo

Villa Cordevigo is situated a few kilometres from Cavaion Veronese near Lake Garda in the province of Verona. The villa was built in 1700 over an even older palazzo. Visitors will find the following of particular interest: the central fountain, the mall Italian style garden, the elegant stables and the remains of an ancient Roman villa. Villa Cordevigo was bought in 2002 by the Villabella vine and wine production company, which transformed this splendid villa of Lake Garda in the province of Verona into a food and wine centre, where tasting sessions, seminars and cookery courses are organised and where visitors can purchase the wines and typical products of Lake Garda.


Villa Pellegrini (Castion)

Villa Pellegrini Cipolla is in the Castion Veronese locality, between Lake Garda and the slopes of Monte Baldo in the province of Verona. The villa was built in 1760 by count Pellegrini, an architect, who also designed many palazzos in the centre of Verona. Napoleon Bonaparte and Luigi Einaudi are among the illustrious guests that this villa welcomed during the course of centuries. The garden park and the villa's rooms in Baroque style, frescoed with countryside and holiday scenes are available today for various initiatives.


GARDA


Villa Albertini

It is one of the most sumptuous and impressive villas of Lake Garda, well known above all for having hosted King Carlo Alberto in 1848. Villa Albertini is located in the central zone of Lake Garda, and is immersed in a large English style park with fountains, avenues and a small church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. Villa Albertini was built on Lake Garda by the Becelli family and subsequently became the property of the Albertini family, whose name it bears. The splendid park - created in the second half of the XIX century - includes avenues, glades, grottoes with cascades and fountains. The park extends upward along the hill near Lake Garda, concealing many minor buildings: towers, view points, small temples, kiosks, hot houses, cedar woods, in addition to avenues and fountains.


Villa Guarienti

Villa Guarienti is part of the splendid scenario of Punta San Vigilio, a few kilometres from Lake Garda, in the province of Verona. Today the villa is the agency office of Giovanni Rana, the colossus of the Italian food industry, famous for its tortellini. The beauty of the villa can be admired from Lake Garda. The main building of the villa is surrounded by a large park, a port with a dock and a small church. Villa Guarienti was built by Agostino Brenzoni, the humanist, who selected Punta San Vigilio on Lake Garda in the province of Verona, because it well expressed the ideals of harmony of the literary movement to which he himself belonged.


Palazzo dei Capitani

The Palazzo dei Capitani in Garda in the province of Verona is situated in piazza Catullo, on the road that runs around the lake. It was built in gothic-venetian style in about the XIV-XV centuries. The name derives from the ancient premises of the Captain of the Lake. This person represented the Venetian republic on Lake Garda, and had the duty of surveying the waters of Lake Garda to prevent smuggling. The Captain of the Lake also chaired the Council of the Gardesana dell'Acqua.


LAZISE


Villa dei Cedri (cedars villa)

It is located in Colà di Lazise on Lake Garda in the province of Verona. Villa dei Cedri is inside the Spa Park of Villa dei Cedri. The Villa dei Cedri was built in neo-classical style between the end of the XVIII century and the beginning of the XIX century, by the architect Luigi Canonica, inspired by the Napoleonic villas. It is the most prestigious building inside the Villa dei Cedri Spa Park. The large, well cared for park houses spa sources at 37°C and is open to the public.


Dogana Veneta (Veneto Custom house)

The Veneto Customs House of Lazise on Lake Garda in the province of Verona, was built in the XVI Century. It is a very attractive building from the Venetian epoch and is situated close to the port of Lasize, directly overlooking Lake Garda. The Veneto Customs House was originally the arsenal of the Venice Republic on Lake Garda, and commerce on Lake Garda was for centuries supervised from here. The Veneto Customs House of Lazise on Lake Garda in the province of Verona is also the border point between Lombardy and the Venice Republic: the façade originally had large vaulted arches through which the mercantile ships/boats had to pass, paying duties to the Venice Republic. MALCESINE


Palazzo dei Capitani

The Palazzo dei Capitani of Malcesine on Lake Garda in the province of Verona is near the port of Malcesine. During the Venetian epoch, the Palazzo dei Capitani was the home of the Captain of the Lake, hence the name. There are frescoes from the XVI Century inside, while the tourist information office (IAT) is on the ground floor. The Palazzo was built by the Scaligeri between the XIII and XIV Centuries over Roman and Romanesque remains. After it was reduced to a wall only, probably due to an earthquake or fire, it was transferred to Francesco Mercanti of Verona, and from him to his children. The young Mercanti sold the Palazzo to Alessandro Miniscalchi in 1473. At that time the building had already been restructured in Venetian style and richly decorated. In 1618 the palazzo was bought by the city of Verona, as suggested by the Venice Republic, to be used as the residence of the Captain of the Lake. In 1854 the Palazzo was rented by the city of Verona to the municipality of Malcesine and was definitively sold in 1897. Since 1902 the Palazzo dei Capitani of Malcesine on Lake Garda in the province of Verona has been a national monument.


SAN ZENO DI MONTAGNA


Palazzo Ca’ Montagna

San Zeno di Montagna is on Monte Baldo in the province of Verona, and from here visitors can enjoy a splendid view of Lake Garda. VALEGGIO SUL MINCIO


Villa Sigurtà

Villa Sigurtà-Maffei is situated in Valeggio sul Mincio, a few kilometres from Lake Garda. The villa in neoclassical style was built in 1692 by Vincenzo Pellesina. In 1859 it hosted Napoleon III and his headquarters. The façade, with a large loggia decorated with columns and capitals, is shut by a large pediment with sloping roof and tympanum decorated with three pinnacles. The fame of the villa is due to the Sigurtà Garden Park, open to the public and containing lakes, flower beds, hedges and plants of all types, spread over 50 hectares, where visitors can take wonderful walks.

This is a private museum created inside the F.lli Zeni wine store, in Costabella di Bardolino, on Lake Garda in the province of Verona.

The Risorgimento Museum exhibits many interesting military instruments, documents and various testimonies of the history of the Italian Risorgimento, as well as photographs of the first world war.


RIVOLI VERONESE


Napoleonic Museum

The Napoleonic Museum of Rivoli Veronese, a few kilometres from Lake Garda in the province of Verona was prepared and arranged by Mr. Luigi Galanti, and was opened in 1975. The testimonies in the museum focus on the famous battle which took place on 14 January 1797, where the army led by Napoleon defeated the Austrians. Materials from the Italian Risorgimento are on show beside the model of the battle ground, documents and original weapons of that time, at the Napoleonic Museum of Rivoli Veronese, a few kilometres from Lake Garda in the province of Verona. Fort “Wohlgemuth” of Rivoli

Fort Wohlgemuth, also known simply as Forte Rivoli, is located in Rivoli Veronese, a few kilometres from Lake Garda in the province of Verona. The fort was built in 1881 in a dominating position at the entrance of the Adige Valley; it is an imposing roundish building of special historic, architectural and military interest.
